Running Physical Therapy in Winston-Salem, NC

Stop Running Through It. Start Running Past It.

Runners come to us dealing with recurring knee, hip, Achilles, or shin issues that flare every time training picks back up. At Elite Movement, you work one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy to find the actual driver of the problem — then build back to full mileage with a plan that holds.

Why Runners Keep Landing in the Same Spot

You Take Time Off, Feel Better, and Break Down Again at Mile 8

Rest brings the pain down, but the hip weakness, gait pattern, or loading fault that created the problem is still there. The moment training volume climbs back up, the same issue finds you — right on schedule.

You've Done the Exercises — but Nothing Actually Changed

Generic hip and glute work helps some runners and does nothing for others — because it depends on what's actually driving the injury. Without a real assessment, you're following a protocol built for someone else's problem.

You Never Got a Real Answer About What's Causing It

Most runners leave their first PT visit with exercises but no explanation. No one identifies the specific strength deficit, mobility restriction, or mechanics pattern that keeps bringing the pain back every training block.

Common Conditions We Treat

Who We Work With for Running PT

Runners and active adults dealing with injuries or pain that keeps interrupting training.

Runners With Recurring Knee Pain — dealing with patellofemoral pain, runner's knee, or lateral knee issues that flare with mileage and won't resolve with rest alone.

Runners With Hip and Glute Issues — navigating hip flexor tightness, labral irritation, hip impingement, or weakness patterns that show up on longer efforts and tempo runs.

Runners Dealing With Achilles or Calf Problems — managing Achilles tendinopathy or calf strain that limits training load and keeps coming back when mileage builds up again.

Runners With Shin and Foot Pain — dealing with shin splints, plantar fasciitis, or stress-related foot issues tied to load spikes or mechanics patterns during build phases.

Runners Training for a Race — managing pain or performance issues mid-training cycle and needing answers that don't require stopping training entirely to figure it out.

Runners Returning From Injury — cleared to run but wanting objective confirmation that loading tolerance and mechanics are actually ready before pushing mileage back up.

Recreational Runners Staying Healthy Long-Term — not chasing a PR, but committed to running consistently without breaking down season after season.

Runners Who've Tried Standard PT Without Lasting Results — done with generic programs that bring temporary relief but never actually fix what keeps causing the flare.

What Our Runners Say

Hear from runners who finally found what was driving the problem — and stayed healthy through their next training block.

For 11 weeks I have worked with trainer Jeb Byerley. Despite residual effects from two serious injuries in the last decade, I have found myself growing stronger and more confident under Jeb's coaching. He is sensitive to building someone's strength gradually and attending to his client's proper form for completion of any exercise. I highly recommend Jeb for his patient, caring, joyful manner in helping someone who is semi-retired continue to build a healthy foundation for lots more hiking and adventures ahead.

If I’ve learned nothing else, don’t put off going to see David at Elite Movement! I was in pain for years and previous physical therapy did not do the trick. David uses a multimodal approach, and goes above and beyond to figure out the root of the issue. Working with David got me to a pain-free point and he has encouraged me to make all around lifestyle changes, an extra step many PTs do not take. I enjoy fitness again and feel better than ever!

David is a very knowledgeable and genuine PT. He has taken an individual approach to address issues while also being intentional with helping me work through pain while I stay active. I am grateful for his time and approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions runners most often ask before booking their first visit at Elite Movement.

What does running physical therapy at Elite Movement actually look like?

Your first visit is a full evaluation — movement screen, strength testing, running history, and injury pattern review — with your DPT. From there, we build a treatment plan that targets what the assessment actually found. Every follow-up session is one-on-one with the same DPT, building toward a structured return-to-run progression, not just a discharge at pain-free.

Do I need a referral for running PT in North Carolina?

No referral needed. North Carolina allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can book a free phone consult and get started without waiting on a physician's order. If your situation calls for imaging or a specialist referral, we'll tell you directly after the eval — but that's rarely the first step for running injuries.

How is cash-based running PT different from going through insurance?

Cash-based PT means one-on-one care for a full hour with your DPT — no aides, no split-session billing, no visit limits determined by your insurance plan. Your treatment is built around what you need, not what's reimbursable. We can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits, but we never let insurance dictate how your plan is structured.

How long will it take to get back to full training mileage?

Timeline depends on how long the issue has been going on, your current strength baseline, and how you respond to treatment. Most runners dealing with a recent flare can expect to return to full training within 6–10 weeks with a structured plan. We give you an honest projection after the initial eval — not a vague range designed to get you to commit to a package.

Can you help with running injuries during an active training block?

Yes — and that's actually when many runners come to us. The goal is to keep you as active as possible through recovery, not pull you off training entirely. We work with your current load, make modifications where needed, and build a plan that gets you to the start line healthy — not just rested. If a full stop is necessary, we'll tell you clearly and explain why.
